BPEX Weekly: Disease Alert Special

Swine Dysentery Confirmed in Yorkshire

PHIP logo

A case of dysentery has been confirmed in North Yorkshire and there are five other suspected cases in the region.

The case confirmed is a member of the Swine Dysentery Producer Charter, so all members of the charter have been informed of location and the status of the outbreak.  The producer has informed haulage, feed and deadstock suppliers.

Obviously this is a huge concern for the area. The industry wants to get on top of the issue and help with control as quickly as possible.

Producers in the region should:

  • Review biosecurity
  • Inform a vet about any suspected cases
  • Sign up to the Swine Dysentery Producer Charter to receive regional disease alerts by clicking here.

Biosecurity

Key points to prevent and control swine dysentery:

  • Good hygiene, cleaning and disinfection of boots, clothing, housing and vehicles
  • Ensure that vehicles moving pigs and hauliers providing supplies are cleaned and disinfected before entering your unit
  • Provide clear signage for vehicles to control where they go on your unit
  • Review rodent and bird control
  • Inform neighbours, hauliers, suppliers of any cases to minimise risk of spread
  • Ensure your staff are aware of your biosecurity protocols

Factsheets are available by clicking here.

Information for Vets

  1. Where vets have a client with suspected/confirmed dysentery they should:
    • Ring BPEX on 0247 6478 877 or 07973 701 369 or email pighealth@bpex.ahdb.org.uk to inform of the case so that centrally BPEX can keep track of cases occurring across the region and hopefully identify common factors in the strain along with likely cause of spread.
    • BPEX can then send out alerts to producers and vets that new cases have been suspected in the general North Yorkshire region
    • Follow up phone call with a text message to 07973 701 369 with details to ensure data accuracy

Producers or vets who would like to sign up for text alerts should click here.

The regular BPEX Weekly will be sent out as normal on Friday afternoon.
