Snippets from the South - 20th April 2010

Successful ‘wean to finish’, tips from Thailand on looking after sows in summer and euthanasia are just a few of the topics featured at Pig Clubs and workshops in the South this month…

Fran Baird presented some options for success at the wean to finish stage – how do we increase our profit per pig?

• Eliminating waste in the feed system
• Improving biological efficiency by improving health, growth rates and FCR
• Feeder design is critical

Helen Thoday got producers thinking about how to deal with sows in hot weather, using examples from Thai production. Neglecting provision of features for sow comfort is not an option if we are to continue staying profitable in hot summers. For more ideas from tropical Thailand visit Helen’s blog on the NPA website: http://www.pigworld.co.uk/Pages/HelenBlog2010.html

Larkmead Vets advised producers on the process of deciding whether to euthanise a sick or injured pig, along with the correct treatment and disposal of the body. Charlie Mason from HSA talked about best practice for the killing of pigs on farm with a stun and pith method and the benefits of free bullet methods to the pig industry. Importantly, he helped producers understand the complex legal aspects, including being a licensed slaughter person.
