This week three new pig producers have made contact with the BPEX Knowledge Transfer team, but why has it taken them so long? We want to hear from more producers – from any type or size of unit with any problem they need help solving. The key driver for the KT team is to improve production on farm.
One producer got in contact with BPEX for the first time through their consultancy firm, Lawrence Gould. After a visit from the regional KT Manager there is now a clear plan for improving recording, refurbishing farrowing crates and slurry store information. We were also able to put them in touch with the local Regional Development Agency for some health plan funding.
The second
producer was looking for farrowing house training for a new member of staff and
Mike Watkins from SCA recommend the services of the KT team. Hopefully the first
training session will encourage the unit owner and other staff to come to local
pig club meetings and other training events.
The third
producer was interested in a gilt management workshop on the website calendar
and, although it was too far away, they had asked for the information pack that
went with the workshop. This triggered a response within the KT Team and the
regional manager got in touch to see if there were any forthcoming events or on
farm-problem solving we could do based on gilt management.
All three
producers are now on our contact list and we hope they, and many more producers,
will look for more KT activities and advice in the future to help improve pig
performance.
