Improving the health and welfare of British pigs is a vital part of restoring the competitiveness of the British pig industry.

The British Pig Health and Welfare Strategy launched in December 2003, provides the framework by which this objective of enhancing competitiveness will be achieved.

The strategy was developed through collaborations of British Pig Executive, Meat and Livestock Commission, National Pig Association, and the Pig Veterinary Society and comprises nine areas of priority as follows:

  • Create Health and Welfare Council
  • Establish health & disease status
  • Communicate disease surveillance information to industry
  • Intervention studies on control/eradication & TI
  • Biosecurity
  • Tackling new diseases
  • Risks/consequences of emerging pig issues
  • Training farmers and specialists
  • Targeted pig research

Vaccination guidelines

The RUMA (The Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture) Alliance has issued new guidelines on the responsible use of vaccines and vaccination in farm animals, these can be found here.
